- U2 is one of the most popular rock bands of all time, having sold over 170 million records worldwide since they formed in 1976. Band members Bono, Larry Mullen Jr., Adam Clayton and The Edge met as high school students in Dublin, Ireland and are still making music together 30 years later, most recently releasing How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb in 2004, which won 8 Grammy Awards.
- Bono, The Edge and Mullen are all self-identified Christians. Bono’s lyrics reflect his faith and often contain biblical references. He has often remarked on his affection for The Message, Eugene Peterson’s paraphase of the Bible, even giving a copy to President George W. Bush as a gift in 2005. Although he is skeptical of organized religion, Bono’s social activism is clearly a reflection of his faith.
- U2 has been active in human rights campaigns throughout their career. Bono has campaigned on issues such as African debt cancellation, fair trade and HIV/AIDS. He is a spokesperson for the Make Poverty History campaign as well as its American counterpart the One Campaign, both of which urge world leaders and ordinary citizens to take action to end global poverty by achieving the Millenium Development Goals.
