Christian Formation across the Lifespan
Whether a very young child or a seasoned adult, all Christians need to continue learning about their faith. Formal Christian learning does not end with Confirmation, but continues across the lifespan. The Church of the Reconciliation attempts to meet the learning needs of its parishioners in a variety of ways.
Our youngest parishioners begin their understanding of God in the most natural way. Children love to play. The program “Godly Play” is a wonderful way for them to learn and explore their relationship with God through stories and hands on learning. We will begin using “Godly Play” with our children, ages 2 through 5, in September, 2010.
School-age children in the parish meet every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. We are currently using Learning Resources’ Workshop Rotations as their curriculum. At 10:30 a.m., the children join their parents in church for the remainder of the service of Holy Eucharist.
Teens age 13-17 participate in our Youth Group. They meet with Pastor Janice or one of our other adult lay leaders on Sundays from noon to 1:30 p.m. Lunch is provided. Our young people discuss current issues pertinent to their life and faith, as well as books and movies with significant moral or religious themes. In addition, our Youth Group engages in mission and outreach work by participating in the annual Walk for Hunger; and raising money for Heifer International, etc. For fun, the group has gone skiing together, participated in a Haunted Hay Ride, and is currently planning a whitewater rafting trip for summer, 2010.
Our adult Christian formation takes place on Sundays from noon to 1:30 p.m. (with lunch), and our efforts are varied. We typically have at least one season of Bible Study (Advent or Lent), and then another season of a book study. Intermittently, we have lessons in church history, an Instructed Eucharist, and a summer series called “Pastor’s Forum.”
